Free swim time benchmark. Enter a time for 100 m, 400 m, 1500 m, a mile, 1.9 km (70.3) or 3.8 km (Ironman) and get your pace per 100 m or 100 yd, the rule-of-thumb range it falls in (beginner, recreational, fit recreational, club, competitive), and for 1.9 km and 3.8 km a comparison with published triathlon swim medians. The pool ranges are rule-of-thumb coaching ranges, not measured percentiles; the triathlon numbers come from TriTimes finisher statistics and a 2024 PLOS ONE analysis.

How long does it take to swim a mile? A mile is 1609 m, so the time depends on your pace per 100 m: about 24:08 at 1:30, 32:11 at 2:00 and 40:14 at 2:30. The U.S. Masters Swimming pace chart lists 1650 yards at 41:15 for a 2:30 pace and 33:00 for 2:00. In our rule-of-thumb ranges, a fit recreational swimmer (1:40 to 2:00 per 100 m) takes 27 to 32 minutes and a recreational swimmer (2:00 to 2:30) 32 to 40 minutes.

Is swimming a mile in 40 minutes good? Yes. 40:00 for a mile is about 2:29 per 100 m, a solid recreational pace at the slower edge of our recreational range (a rule of thumb, not a measured percentile). Breaking 35 minutes needs roughly 2:10 per 100 m, and 30 minutes about 1:52 per 100 m. What is an average Ironman swim time? The median Ironman swim (3.8 km) is 1:15:38 across 805,030 finisher results from 2002 to 2026 (TriTimes), about 1:59 per 100 m.

A peer-reviewed analysis of 687,696 age-group finishers (Knechtle et al., PLOS ONE 2024) reports mean swim splits of 1:17:21 for men and 1:21:41 for women; means run slower than medians because slow swims stretch the tail. The median IRONMAN 70.3 swim (1.9 km) is 38:39, about 2:02 per 100 m. How fast should I swim 100 m? There is no single right time.

Public data does not rank recreational swimmers, so we use rule-of-thumb ranges per 100 m: under 1:20 competitive, 1:20 to 1:40 club, 1:40 to 2:00 fit recreational, 2:00 to 2:30 recreational, slower than 2:30 beginner. A single all-out 100 m is faster than the pace you can hold for a mile, so a 100 m time will usually land in a faster range than your mile time.
