New Garmin Swim Workouts 2026
Garmin expanded its built-in swim workouts. What is new, why they are freestyle-first, and how to run structured pool sets at your own pace on any watch.
Garmin has been quietly expanding the swim workouts baked into Garmin Connect, adding freestyle-focused sessions for technique, endurance, and pacing. It is a welcome step up from one generic pool swim. It is also a fixed menu, and the moment you want a specific number of reps at your own pace, you hit its edge. Here is what is new, and how to run a structured set the library will not give you.
What is new in Garmin's swim workouts
For a long time the swim experience on a Garmin watch was mostly tracking: lengths, SWOLF, rest, done. The recent shift is toward guided structure. Garmin has been growing the number of pre-made pool sessions, and reporting on the additions points to swim and walking workouts that lean on technique and pacing rather than a single generic set.
If you have a compatible watch, this is worth turning on. A guided pool set beats staring at a whiteboard and losing count at rep four. For the mechanics of how a structured workout reads on your wrist, our Garmin swim workouts guide covers the pool swim activity in detail.
Where the built-in library runs out
A pre-made library solves the beginner problem, which is not knowing what to swim. It does not solve the improver problem, which is swimming a specific set at a specific pace you can repeat and beat. A fixed menu cannot know your CSS, and it will not let you bend a session to it.
This is also why two swimmers can run the same built-in threshold session and get very different training out of it. Without a pace anchored to your own test, the structure is real but the intensity is a guess. That is the gap worth closing.
A complete session you control, on the same watch
Here is a full pool session that does what a fixed menu cannot: it moves from an aerobic base into a threshold block pinned to your Critical Swim Speed , then finishes with short speed. Every rep count and rest here is a choice, not a default.
The threshold block is the part a built-in workout cannot personalize. Six 100s at your CSS on a fixed 15-second rest is a benchmark you can re-swim in a month and see the improvement. Find your CSS first with the swim pace calculator , then set the target to that number.
How to get your own set onto a Garmin
The good news is that the watch does not care who wrote the workout. A custom session guides rep by rep exactly like a built-in one, so you keep the guided experience and add the personalization Garmin's library skips.
Build the session in the swim workout generator , assign each block its zone and target, then either Send to Garmin with a connected account or download a Garmin-compatible FIT file for manual transfer. The export guide covers both routes step by step. Prefer to let a plan schedule your base and drop in specific sessions? The Garmin Coach SWIM breakdown shows how the adaptive coaching and a custom set fit together.
Not in a building mood? The free swim workouts library has ready sessions you can adjust to your pace and export as Garmin-compatible FIT workouts.
