This is AquaPlan's first annual State of Swim Training report, compiled from anonymized workout library usage patterns and builder analytics collected between January 2025 and April 2026. The goal is simple: give swimmers, coaches, and triathletes a data-backed view of how people actually train — not how they claim to train on social media.
The dataset covers thousands of completed sessions, training block selections, Garmin FIT exports, and pool-length preferences. Every metric is aggregated and anonymized. No individual swimmer is identifiable.
How Often Do Swimmers Train? Three Sessions Per Week Is the Norm
The most common training frequency among AquaPlan users is 3 times per week, accounting for 42% of all active swimmers. When combined with 2x/week (28%) and 4x/week (18%), the 2-4x/week band covers 88% of the entire user base.
What this means for workout design: The majority of swimmers are not professionals. They have jobs, families, and limited recovery time. Workouts designed for the 3x/week swimmer must balance stimulus with fatigue management. A 2,000m session with zone discipline beats a 3,500m junkyard session every time.

The median session distance across all AquaPlan users is 2,000 meters. The most common session length range is 1,500-2,500m, representing 57% of all tracked workouts. Short sessions under 1,500m make up 22% of workouts, while long sessions over 3,000m account for just 8%.
The longest single session tracked in the dataset is 5,200m — a distance volume session completed by an Ironman-distance triathlete in January 2026. Less than 3% of users regularly exceed 4,000m per session.
Pool Length Breakdown
Distance is not just a number — it dictates rest interval design, turn frequency, and energy system emphasis. A 2,000m session in a 50m pool is physiologically different from the same distance in a 25m pool, even at the same pace.
The Most Popular Training Zones: Endurance Dominates at 62%
Endurance zones dominate swim training. EN2 (Endurance 2 / Aerobic Threshold) accounts for 38% of all training blocks, while EN1 (Endurance 1 / Easy Aerobic) adds another 24%. Combined, aerobic work makes up 62% of all structured training in the AquaPlan library.
Analysis: Most swimmers are doing base work, not high-intensity. Combined threshold (WA) and sprint (SP1-SP3) work accounts for only 16% of all blocks. Drill and technique work (DR) at 14% shows that a significant portion of users prioritize form over raw fitness — a trend that correlates with lower injury rates in follow-up surveys.
Recovery (REC) at 5% and kick (KI) at 3% are the smallest categories. The low kick percentage suggests many swimmers treat kick sets as optional — a mistake if body position or hip-driven freestyle is a weakness.

Training volume follows predictable seasonal cycles. January sees the largest single month-over-month spike (+34%) as swimmers act on New Year goals. March rises (+18%) ahead of summer competitions and open water season. September jumps (+22%) as post-summer routines reset after August holidays.
Monthly Volume Index (Baseline = 100)
Sprint and race-pace blocks increase in May-July. During competition season, SP1-SP3 and WA block usage rises from a combined 16% baseline to 24% of all blocks. Swimmers shift from base work to speed and race simulation.
