AI Swim Coach for Garmin: Workouts Written by AI, Run on Your Watch

Can an AI write my swim workouts and send them to my Garmin? Yes. Connect AquaPlan’s MCP server to ChatGPT, Claude or Codex and ask for the session you want: the assistant drafts it, AquaPlan validates it and saves it, and when you ask, it sends it to your Garmin Connect calendar as a structured pool swim workout with its repeats and rest. MCP access is included with the Coach plan (€18/month, or €12/month billed yearly), and you review the draft in AquaPlan before it reaches your watch.

How it works

Get Coach and connect Garmin

The MCP server checks for an active Coach plan (€18/month) on every request; Free and Premium (€9/month) accounts are refused. Connect your Garmin account in AquaPlan so the assistant has somewhere to send the workout.

Add one URL to your assistant

Paste the AquaPlan server URL into ChatGPT, Claude or Codex and approve the AquaPlan sign-in once. There is no API key or token to copy. The /mcp guide has the exact steps and commands for each client.

Ask for the session

For example: “Draft a 45-minute threshold session for a 25 m pool. My CSS pace is 1:48 per 100 m. Validate it and save it as an AquaPlan draft.” The assistant reads your recent swims, builds the set and runs it through AquaPlan’s validator, so distances and intervals add up.

Review it, then send it to your Garmin

Open the private draft in AquaPlan and change what you want. Then ask the assistant to preview the Garmin delivery for a date and send it. The workout lands on your Garmin Connect calendar and syncs to a compatible watch, where you run it in Pool Swim mode.

What the AI can and cannot do

Read your profile and recent swims, so a session starts from what you actually did.

Draft a pool session from AquaPlan’s curated sessions and validate distances, intervals and structure.

Save and edit private drafts, with version checks so edits never overwrite each other.

Check your Garmin connection, preview the delivery and send your own saved workout to your Garmin. Sending the same workout again does not create a duplicate.

It drafts, you confirm. The assistant does not coach you in real time and does not replace a human coach.

It does not analyse stroke video or technique. AquaPlan does not read video.

It does not promise pace or zone targets on the watch. Supported steps and rests depend on your exact watch model and Garmin software, so review the transferred workout on the device before you swim.

It needs Coach, and ChatGPT only works where your workspace allows custom MCP servers (currently mainly Business, Enterprise and Edu). Claude and Codex connect the same way; check each client’s own plan limits.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI write my swim workouts and send them to my Garmin?

Yes, with AquaPlan. Connect the AquaPlan MCP server to ChatGPT, Claude or Codex, ask for a session, and the assistant drafts it, validates it and saves it as a private draft. When you ask, it previews and sends it to your Garmin Connect calendar as a structured pool swim workout with its repeats and rest. It needs the Coach plan (€18/month) and a connected Garmin account.

Can ChatGPT send a swim workout to Garmin?

Not by itself: ChatGPT has no Garmin connection of its own, so it can only write the workout as text. With the AquaPlan MCP server connected, ChatGPT can draft, save and send a workout to Garmin through AquaPlan. ChatGPT custom MCP servers are currently limited to some workspaces, mainly Business, Enterprise and Edu, so check OpenAI’s current requirements first.

Claude and Codex connect to the same server.

What is the best AI swim coach app?

It depends on what you want the AI to do. If the workout has to arrive on a Garmin watch as a structured workout, check which apps state Garmin Connect delivery: AquaPlan, MySwimPro and Blue Lap do, Swimio, SwimIQ and Swimer do not say so on their public pages. MySwimPro is the more guided, app-led coach; AquaPlan is the one where you use your own ChatGPT, Claude or Codex and keep the plan in a swim-specific builder.

If you swim with an Apple Watch, pick an app that lists it.

Which plan includes the AI assistant connection, and what does it cost?

MCP access is included with Coach: €18/month, or €144 billed yearly (€12/month). Free and Premium (€9/month) accounts are refused by the MCP server. You can still build workouts by hand on Free and download a Garmin/FIT file to try.

Does AquaPlan work with Apple Watch?

AquaPlan has no Apple Watch app, and Apple Watch does not read Garmin FIT workout files, so sending structured workouts to the watch is a Garmin feature. You can still plan the session in AquaPlan on iPhone or the web and print the free PDF or read it on your phone at the pool. If you want structured workouts on an Apple Watch, choose an app from the table that lists Apple Watch support.

Will every rep and rest show on my Garmin watch?

AquaPlan sends the repeats and rest steps of the saved workout, and long workouts are folded into repeat groups when they exceed Garmin’s step limit. Support still depends on your exact watch and software: it needs structured Pool Swim workouts, and pace or zone targets are not promised on the watch. Review the workout on the device before swimming, and check the Garmin swimming page for compatible watch families.

Can the AI coach analyse my stroke from a video?

No. The assistant works with your training context and AquaPlan’s workout tools: it reads your recent swims, drafts and validates sessions and sends them to Garmin. It does not analyse stroke video or give real-time technique feedback.

Is it safe to let an AI send workouts to my Garmin?

Sign-in uses OAuth with PKCE, so your assistant config holds a URL and never a secret. Every tool is scoped to your own account, the assistant can only send your own saved workouts, access is checked against your Coach plan on every call, and you can revoke an app at any time in Settings → MCP. Sending the same workout again does not create a duplicate on your calendar.
